Tony Bellew put an 'awful lot of money' on Floyd Mayweather stopping Conor McGregor

Former world champion boxer Tony Bellew has told of putting an "awful lot of money" on Floyd Mayweather stopping Conor McGregor back in 2017.

The Liverpudlian was involved in a lengthy discussion on "Talk The Talk" with Eddie Hearn over the crossover between boxing and MMA.

And naturally the Las Vegas bout that saw Mayweather stop McGregor in the tenth round came up.

Bellew said: "I'm not a big gambler, but believe you me, I had an awful lot of money on Floyd Mayweather to stop Conor McGregor.

"And I'm a huge Conor McGregor fan, but he has no chance whatsoever in a boxing ring against someone as good as that."

Explaining his thinking, Bellew said: "In MMA, the vast majority of them, don't know how to throw a punch correctly because they are getting ready for the takedown - they're never side-on, they have to be square all the time for the kicks or the blocks.

"It's just so hard for them to generate the ferocity and the power that a boxer can generate in a punch.

"For me, Conor McGregor had no hope whatsoever, and that's no discredit to him, because he got in there against the greatest fighter of our era.

"If you put the shoe on the other foot - if Floyd Mayweather was to get into a cage, I swear, I s*** you not, that fight could end whenever Conor McGregor chooses.

"If Conor McGregor throws one kick at Floyd Mayweather's thigh, trust me, he [Mayweather] will jump on the floor and hold his f***ing leg thinking it's about to fall off. "
