Tony Asghar steps down as Dundee United sporting director

Tony Asghar has stepped down from his role at Dundee United.

The experienced football operator is no longer the Tannadice club's sporting director.

The decision has been made just days after Liam Fox and the club mutually agreed to part ways.

And it's for that reason that Asghar has decided to leave, with a new manager to be appointed "within a revamped structure within the football department".

A statement from the club reads: "Dundee United can announce Tony Asghar has stepped down from his role as sporting director.

"Following more than four years at the club, Tony has decided to leave his post to allow the new first team manager to be appointed within a revamped structure within the football department.

"The board and chief executive Luigi Capuano will now lead the process of hiring a new manager and hope to provide an update this week.

"The club will make no further comment at this time."

Asghar has been under pressure from Dundee United fans for several months now.

Protests at last week's AGM saw banners displayed outside Tannadice reading 'Asghar out'.

The former football agent spent over four-years at the club, having joined when they were in the Championship.

The Tangerines are currently bottom of the Premiership, with 12 league matches left to play for them.

They're four points behind both Kilmarnock and Ross County, as the battle to beat the drop looks to heat up in the coming weeks.

It remains to be seen whether United will look to replace Asghar.

Reports have also emerged this evening that a Dundee consortium have approached Mark Ogren about his willingness to sell the club.
