Arsenal icon Tony Adams has suggested that the Gunners ‘need some leaders’ in order to get their season up and running.
Mikel Arteta’s men have endured an inconsistent start to the season having lost their opening three games. They have enjoyed somewhat of a recovery over recent weeks by beating Norwich City and Burnley.
Despite that, the Gunners remain in the lower half of the Premier League table and still appear some way behind the rest of the top four.
Tony Adams has suggested that Arsenal will only start being able to string some consistent performances together when their senior pros take responsibility for the team.
Talking on Sky Sports, he said: “I think you’re going to have to give it a bit more time.
"My issue is the kids are our best players at this moment, Saka and Smith-Rowe they’re not supposed to lead, we need some good experienced players and players that stay fit.
"Partey’s come into the team, he’s been inured a long time now, we need some leaders in the team. Hopefully some growth."
This is an opinion also held by fellow ex-Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna.
In an interview with football.london, he suggested that the elder statesmen at the Emirates Stadium must offer advice to their somewhat younger colleagues.
He said: "I was negative myself because when you see other teams sign big players you want to see the same kind of players coming to the club.
"But we have to trust the young players. We have to trust the older players like Aubameyang and Lacazette who can really bring something to the club.
“They have to be talking to the young players a lot because regarding the experience I’m not sure they have what they need to deal with the pressure because now the team is under pressure.”
