Tons of PPE left at Prestwick Airport after boxes arrived without labels

Tons of PPE was left at Prestwick Airport after boxes full of supplies arrived without labels.

NHS officials have been left scrambling to confirm what exactly is in the 90-ton consignment from China.

There are fears it could lead to delays arming front line workers with life-saving equipment.

The GMB union last night criticised procurement bosses who face fresh embarrassment over the fiasco and said delays like this would lead to more deaths.

GMB national secretary Rehana Azam said: “Every day we hear daily kit on the frontline is running out – yet we have shipments of vital PPE delayed.”

The masks, gowns and other equipment arrived on Friday morning at Prestwick, having been flown from Chengdu in China via Moscow.

It follows a delivery of 10million face masks and other PPE from China that landed in Scotland last week.

A source said when officials opened up the shipment, they found unlabelled boxes – meaning they cannot confirm what they have received.

NHS Scotland has denied there will be delays getting the PPE to the frontline.
