'Tonnes' of asbestos waste dumped where children play

An action group representing residents in north Liverpool has expressed concern after large amounts of waste containing asbestos was dumped on council land.

There are claims that up to 2,000 tonnes of contaminated waste were dumped on the corner of Vauxhall Road and Chisenhale Street in Vauxhall over the last 18 months.

A report by CC Geotechnical Ltd who carried out a survey of the site and found asbestos containing materials ( ACM) in the waste were at levels between 0.622% and 5.08% . It was deemed to be 'hazardous waste.'

The report, seen by the ECHO, was commissioned by a Vauxhall resident last month.

Action group Contamination Vauxhall was formed to highlight the issue and information has been shared on social media.

Liverpool Council started clearing the waste last week. A spokesperson said that the risk to the public from the asbestos was 'minimal' and that further inspections of the site would take place.

A spokesperson for the Contamination Vauxhall action group told the ECHO: "Our main concern is the 2,000 tonnes of waste dumped on the site which was surveyed by CC Geotechnical.

"We hope that all of this waste is removed by the council along with the nearby sheeting. That is crucial.

"Industrial dumping on a large scale has taken place at this site over the last 18 months.

"We think one individual is responsible so far. They are a rogue contractor.

"The issue is that although there is a fence kids play on this site - local lads just climb over the perimeter and jump in.

"We commissioned a report last month and it confirmed there was an issue with asbestos on the site.

"Anything above 0.1% is considered hazardous.

"Yes we are pleased to hear that the council has begun clearing the site but the waste has been there long enough.

"Vauxhall cannot be seen as a dumping ground for unscrupulous business owners who do not care about the community."

A spokesman for Liverpool council said: "Any risk to members of the public has been minimal. In addition the removal of the material is being undertaken by a specialist contractor so the materials can be taken off site in a safe and controlled manner to minimise any risk to the workers and members of the public."

The spokesman added: "Further inspections of the site will take place."
