Tonight's rugby news as Wales players won't travel for personal reasons and Gatland calls in new face

Here are the latest rugby headlines on Monday, June 26.

Wales players won't travel

A number of Wales' Rugby World Cup squad members will not travel to Switzerland with the rest of the party due to personal reasons.

Alex Cuthbert and Owen Williams will play no part in the two-week camp, while Taulupe Faletau will only travel for the second week.

Coach Warren Gatland, who earlier revealed Ken Owens, Will Davies-King and Josh Macleod have left the squad with injuries, said: "Owen Williams and Alex Cuthbert won’t travel to Switzerland for personal reasons but we are looking for them to attend our training camp in Turkey.

"Toby Faletau will not travel to Switzerland in the first week. He has a bit of a calf injury. I spoke to him about staying behind, he has three young kids, his wife has just had a baby. He is going to get some treatment here and come out on Saturday 8 July. I gave him the option and I was more than comfortable with that.

"We’ve had some players that we’ve released from the squad and they said they didn’t want that information released.

"You’ve got to respect players on that because some of it is medical or personal. They said we don’t want you to say anything. We’ve respected their wishes where, in an ideal scenario, you’d like to be able to communicate all that stuff and keep everyone up to date as much as possible.

"That’s been a reflection of some of the things that have been going on behind the scenes. The players are looking and they don’t want a story written about them that potentially has a negative slant about it. I’d like to communicate things as positively as you can but you have to respect the wishes of the players."

New face in Wales squad

One beneficiary from today's Wales injury news was Ospreys hooker Sam Parry, who has been called up to the squad and will now head to Switzerland next week.

Parry has been added the 47-man party after Owens' withdrawal with a back injury.

Gatland believes hooker is a position of strength for Wales, adding: "There is some pretty strong competition for his place with Dewi Lake and Ryan Elias being back in full training. We also have Elliot Dee and Sam Parry, so there is good, strong competition in that position."

Parry is the first new face to be called into the squad despite there now being eight withdrawals from the original 54-man party named.

Vunipola operation

Billy Vunipola has undergone a minor operation on his injured knee but expects to be fit for the Rugby World Cup.

The England forward remains with a 36-player squad named by head coach Steve Borthwick for their third World Cup training camp at The Lensbury Resort in south west London.

"The medical team are positive about my prospects and I understand exactly what needs to be done over the next few weeks," said Vunipola.

The line-up is the same as last week's camp with the exception of Will Joseph and Beno Obano, who both miss out. Players from Gallagher Premiership finalists Sale and Saracens have not been included.

"I'm pleased with the progress that's been made over the last two weeks and we look forward to another productive training camp at the Lensbury," said Borthwick.

"There's still a long way to go until we are ready for a World Cup but each day we take another step forward."

Ollie Chessum, Luke Cowan-Dickie, Ollie Lawrence and Jack Walker all remain with their team-mates as they continue their rehabilitation from injury.

England will take on Wales in Cardiff on August 5, with Borthwick due to name his 33-strong squad for the World Cup in France two days later.
