Tonight is the best night to see Draconid meteor shower

Stargazers are keeping their fingers crossed for clear skies over the region tonight as an annual meteor shower reaches its peak.

The Draconid meteor shower first appeared in the skies above the UK on Sunday and is expected to last about six nights.

But experts agree that tonight, October 8, should be the best.

MirrorOnline reports that there will be up to five meteors visible each hour through the night.

The shower happens each year as the Earth crosses the path of a comet named 21P/Giacobini-Zinner.

Debris from the comet collides with the Earth’s upper atmosphere, where it burns up, producing meteors in the night sky.

If you miss the Draconid meteor shower this week, there is another – probably even better - meteor shower lined up later this month.

The Orionids meteor shower is expected to peak on the night of October 21 and will produce up to 20 meteors per hour - making it much easier to see.

The Draconids will be visible across the sky, appearing to originate from the constellation Draco, and – assuming the skies are clear of clouds - the best chance of seeing is to look away from the moon and other light sources.
