Toni Giugliano named SNP candidate for Dumbarton in 2021 election

Toni Giugliano has been revealed as the Dumbarton SNP candidate who will battle Jackie Baillie in next year's Scottish Parliament elections.

The SNP has this evening announced its list of confirmed constituency candidates.

Announcing his win on social media, Mr Giugliano said: "I'm delighted to announce that the members of Dumbarton constituency have selected me to be their SNP candidate in the Holyrood elections.

"Thank you for putting your trust in me.

"I will work my socks off to gain this seat - I won't let you down."

In August, Mr Giugliano was first to announce he had thrown his hat into the ring for candidacy.

He was later followed by hopefuls Karen Conaghan, who is a West Dunbartonshire councillor, Scott Lafferty, Lorna Douglas and Math Campbell-Sturgess.

SNP members of the local branch took part in a ballot to vote for their favourite, which ended at 12pm today.

Mr Giugliano will face Labour MSP Jackie Baillie in next May's election.

The long-serving MSP has held the Dumbarton seat for six consecutive terms and plans to run again next year.

It could be a tightly contested race with just 109 votes separating the long-standing MSP from SNP newcomer Gail Robertson in 2016.
