Tonga take down PNG to stake claim for future

Tonga's women have claimed just the second Test match win in their history, putting Papua New Guinea to the sword with a 42-6 beating in Port Moresby.

After Cook Islands wrapped up the Pacific Bowl last week, Tonga had their finest hour on Saturday afternoon with a complete domination of the hosts.

Parramatta centre Martha Mataele scored a hat-trick, while five-eighth Malia Tuifua had the best game of her career with an impressive outing at No.6.

Tonga last won a Test match back in 2020 against the tiny island nation of Niue, with their best result prior to that being a draw against Niue in 2003.

But with former Jillaroo Meg Ward as coach, there are clear signs of improvement.

And while they won't be at next year's World Cup, the team do have reason to believe they can build to something bigger for the following global tournament two years later.

Tonga led 10-0 on Saturday before PNG even touched the ball, and while there were flashes of brilliance from the home side it was Tonga who had full control.

Mataele's first tries came when Tonga stretched PNG's right edge, before her third was all class when she stepped and forced her way through five defenders on the siren.

The Eels centre ran 210 metres and bust 16 tackles, and sent Simina Lokotui over for another try.

Naomi Kelly

Wests Tigers lock Jade Fonua produced perhaps the most eye-catching moment of the match, when she barged through four defenders to score in the second half.

PNG's only points came when Naomi Kelly went 65 metres to score in the first half and make it 12-6.

But any hope of a comeback were quickly snuffed out when Kalosipani Hopoate barged through minutes later to put Tonga back in control.
