New Orleans Saints free agent wide receiver Tommylee Lewis agreed to a free agent contract with the Detroit Lions. The Lions announced the signing following a report from Ben Volin of the Boston Globe.
Lewis spent most of the 2018 season on injured reserve, but was the Saints’ first choice for fielding punts when healthy. Including the playoffs, he returned eleven punts for 68 yards and three kickoffs for 69 yards in just nine games. On offense, he caught three of his four targets for 20 yards. The lone incomplete pass was the infamous no-call in the 2018 NFC championship game, in which Lewis was both interfered with and hit illegally helmet-to-helmet, but on-site officials failed to acknowledge either foul.
The Lions will get someone with more experience on special teams than offense in Lewis. The 5-foot-7, 187 pounder out of Northern Illinois could give Detroit a spark given their lack of options in the receiving room. Because Lewis joined the Saints as an undrafted signing back in 2016, he was designated a restricted free agent in 2019. The Saints chose not to give him a one-year contract tender, so they will not qualify for a compensatory draft pick in 2020.
