Tommy Wright opens up on Kilmarnock rebuild as he gears up for season opener

Tommy Wright admits this summer was like none he has ever experienced.

The Kilmarnock boss has signed no less than 14 players – with two more likely to be on their way to Ayrshire before the window shuts next month.

And he says there's barely been enough time in the day to get his work done but he wouldn't have it any other way.

When asked if he's ever had a transfer window like this, he said: "No. At St Johnstone we tried to make sure we were only bringing in five or six players at most each season.

"The days certainly fly in when you're constantly looking at players, making contact with agents and trying to get deals done.

"Myself, James [Fowler], Paul [Stephenson] and all the staff have been working hard.

"Even though we weren't in the building we haven't really had a break.

"That's the way it should be, we've had a rebuild job and I think we've done well in the signings we've made."

And Wright says business isn't finished as he wants to add a couple more faces as he counts down to the start of the Championship campaign.

He said: "Probably two more, definitely a striker and maybe a sort of utility player who can play a couple of positions.

"There definitely won't be more than two. Striker is the main one, I think every manager will tell you that, it's the hardest one to get.

"We need to make sure we pick the right one. We've spoken to a few and had a few knockbacks, a few near misses, but at the minute there's enough in the dressing room.

"But come the league campaign I want to get another two in."

He added: "It could take a couple of weeks to get the right striker in, but on the same token I could go downstairs now and find out we've agreed a deal with someone we've been talking to.

"The window is open until the end of August, if needed we have six weeks to go.

"It's such a key position, we are happy to wait for the right one."

Wright says his squad are settling well and admits the pre-season trip to his native Northern Ireland was exactly what they needed.

He said: "It's good to be back, it was a relatively short turnaround and short pre-season.

"The danger is bringing them back too early as it extends the season, but we've been back for three weeks and we're looking forward to getting some competitive football in.

"It was important to do that after bringing so many new players in. They have been getting on well together both on and off the pitch.

"On the pitch it's still a work in progress, but we did well in the two games we've had and also in training.

"But competitive football will bring that extra bit out in them and I look forward to the group games.

"I feel it gives you good preparation heading into the league games."

Wright has prepared his side for their season opener against East Kilbride today in the Premier Sports Cup – and he can't wait to get going, insisting he won't be taking the Lowland League team lightly.

He said: "They’re an experienced side. I’m expecting a tough game and we’re preparing as though we’re playing the champions.

"They’ll make it difficult and we have to go in with a positive attitude.

"It’s important to get that first win and we’re hoping to do that.

"There are five or six players I won’t risk, they've got niggles you get at this time of year."
