Tommy Wright jokes Hibs fans were right to make 'fat so-and-so' jibe before Sahara walk

Tommy Wright has joked that Hibs fans were right to call him a 'fat so-and-so' as he revealed his weight loss during lockdown.

The new Kilmarnock boss has dropped more than two stone since quitting as St Johnstone manager after his initial plans for a break were put on hold by Covid-19.

The Northern Irishman quit Saints last summer and had hoped to go on holiday and visit clubs to build up his knowledge of the game but that was ruined by the pandemic.

So he got his walking boots on and revealed he has walked the length of the Sahara desert during lockdown and lost a lot of weight.

And he joked that the slagging he took from fans of the Easter Road club might have been spot on as he got back to work in the Premiership.

He said: “I didn’t actually get the break I envisaged because of Covid. I had holidays planned and trips to clubs abroad and in England to keep improving as a coach and a manager.

“I was able to do some stuff online through the FA so that was good. The FitBit has informed me I have walked the length of the Sahara desert, so I think that’s far enough.

“I played a lot of golf when I could and I started to walk. Unfortunately, with my knees, I cannot do any running, so I did a lot of walking.

“I built up to 70kms a week, my training shoes have done more kilometres than my car over the last period of time and I lost a lot of weight, about 2.5 stone.

“Maybe the Hibs fans were right to call me a fat so and so! But I’m ready to get back.”
