Tommy Wright admits he'd sacrifice Scottish Cup to ensure Kilmarnock survival

Tommy Wright admits he’d happily sacrifice a Scottish Cup run if it meant Premiership survival.

The Kilmarnock boss is gearing his side up for two crucial clashes this week as they prepare to face Dundee United tonight before a Scottish Cup quarter-final on Monday night in front of the BBC cameras against St Mirren.

And as much as Wright would love to win both and guide his side to Hampden, he has made it clear avoiding relegation is his one and only target.

Speaking to the Kilmarnock Standard he said: “Last time we played Dundee United we didn’t get the goals that our performance merited, so we will be looking for a positive result. The main objective is staying in the league. If you give me safety and getting knocked out of the cup I will take that rather than progressing in the cup and not being safe.

“The league is the main focus for the team, the cup is just a bonus.”

He added: “We have got to better Ross County, but just by one point, because we have a far superior goal difference.

“If they get four wins then they deserve to stay up.

“It’s not as if we need three more than them, we just need to get one more point than them over four games.

“We know if we win the four games we will most likely be safe. I don’t think 10th would be a problem if that was the case.”
