Tommy Widdrington confirms Bristol Rovers captain Max Ehmer's injury ahead of Gillingham return

Max Ehmer missed Bristol Rovers’ 3-1 win over Portsmouth with a shoulder injury, caretaker manager Tommy Widdrington has revealed.

The captain has played more League One minutes than any other Rovers player this season, but – with Rovers unable to train at The Quarters due to a frozen pitch on Friday – the centre-back slipped on an artificial surface and sustained damage to his shoulder.

“Max fell on his shoulder the other day, not this Saturday when the (Mem) pitch wasn’t frozen,” Widdrington said.

“We were on an AstroTurf on Friday when the training pitches were frozen and he had an issue where he didn’t feel 100 per cent.

“For lack of a better expression, I wanted everyone to feel 100 per cent so he stood up and said he wasn’t that and wasn’t capable of that.

“I don’t go and put the square peg in the round hole. You find the spare one and put it in there so, Jack (Baldwin) moved to the right and Cian (Harries) went to the left.”

Ehmer joined Rovers from Gillingham in the summer and Widdrington hopes to have his skipper available when the Gas travel to Priestfield on Saturday.

“Max’s is a 29-year-old fella, he’ll know his body better than we will,” the director of football said.

“But we know there’s damage there and there’s a possibility he’ll need something done to it, but it’s manageable until the end of the season.

“With a bit of luck and Gillingham on the horizon, with his history, I would like to think he’s chomping at the bit and knocking on the door, but we’ll see.”
