Tommy Tiernan left ‘limping’ after suffering nasty fall down the stairs

Tommy Tiernan has been left ‘limping’ after suffering a nasty fall down the stairs in his home last Friday night.

The comedian and popular RTE chat show host said he injured his leg, ribs, neck and voice in the late night incident.

Speaking on The Tommy, Hector & Laurita Podcast, he explained: “It’s such an old person thing to do. But I fell all the way down the stairs. Head over heels.

“I had a glass of whiskey and a book in my hand so when I slipped I couldn't grab onto the banister.

“And I just was gone. I've busted my leg and my chest and my neck, and my voice.

“My voice is sensitive."

Poking fun at himself, he added: "I've hurt myself into sensitivity.”

He went on to insist: “I was not drunk,” after probing from co-host and pal Hector.

“I’d had one [glass of whiskey] but I had a full one in my hand,” he said.

The funnyman said he broke no bones but sustained muscle damage in the fall.

"I broke nothing but muscle has come off bone or tendons [on my leg] are stretched, something like that,” he explained.

“The ribs are done in as well. The ribs weren’t from being hit, the ribs were from some weird stretch that I did in the fall.

“So I’m limping. It was a very difficult night last Friday night. And then seen by the doctor on Saturday.

“I’ll be limping now for awhile.”

Tommy said he had been left unable to speak as loudly as he normally would and said he is also worried about listening to his guests on the Tommy Tiernan Show on RTE on Saturday night.

“It’s hard to listen when you’re in pain,” he said.

He went on to admit that the accident has left him lacking in confidence.

“As you get older, it doesn’t just affect your body. It affects your mind.

“I’m just like an auld lad, walking around.”

Tommy explained the unfortunate incident happened when he became distracted by an Easter decoration his wife Yvonne had hung up before he fell.

“I had never seen it before so I was coming down the steps and wondering ‘what the fuck is that?’ I couldn't make head nor tail out of it.

"I was wearing socks and carrying whiskey, and I had a book in me hand, a book about God.

“And I missed the [step], I came down on the curve.

“And I was gone."

Asked if he went head first in the fall, he said: “Yeah, I went all the way down from the second step. And I was delivered then out onto the floor, helpless like a baba, roaring out of me.”

He said his wife Yvonne panicked, as she had to ease him into pain relief.

He joked that the injuries are a setback, after he promised to do an ultra marathon with Dr Sinead Kane on his RTE TV show last weekend.

Sinead, who has only 5% vision and is legally blind, became the first blind person to complete a marathon on each of the seven Continents in 2017.
