Tommy Smith transfer blow for Celtic as Stoke City set to sign Huddersfield star

Celtic's right back search has suffered a set back with top target Tommy Smith on the verge of a switch to Stoke City.

The Huddersfield Town defender was high up on Neil Lennon’s wishlist with the Hoops willing to bid up to £2.5m for the 27-year-old.

But Record Sport understands Smith has opted to remain in the Championship after the Potters met the asking price and a deal is set to be sealed on Thursday.

The full back was spotted leaving Huddersfield’s training camp in Austria on Wednesday but was heading to Staffordshire rather than Glasgow.

Celtic remain in the market for a right back and the loss of Smith could open the door for a move for Sheffield United’s George Baldock – who was also on Stoke’s radar.

The Parkhead side failed in a £3m bid for 26-year-old last month but could go back to the table with an increased bid.

Youngster Anthony Ralston is the only recognised right back on the books and centre back Kris Ajer slotted in to the role in the 3-1 Champions League qualifier win in Sarajevo on Tuesday.

Celtic have one foot in the next round and boss Lennon has until July 18 to register new players to be eligible for any second qualifier.
