Tommy Sheridan and Bruce Kent at Faslane

After five hours of good-natured goading of the police with drumming, dancing and – at midday – a religious commuion in front of the barbed wire approach gates to Faslane, many protesters are getting a little weary in the legs, and hungry.

It seemed a good moment to catch up with two of the more famous faces on today's protest: the former Scottish Socialist party leader and MSP Tommy Sheridan and the former head of CND Monseigneur Bruce Kent.

Tommy Sheridan:

"Today has been a success. Nobody's coming or going out of those gates. That's not always been the case in the past. I've been arrested here five times in the past, blockading these gates.

"Faslane is a carbuncle on the face of Scotland. It despoils our landscape, and represents all that's wrong with the G8 meeting in Gleneagles, spending billions on destruction, when we are standing here today for peace and solidarity.

"This base costs £1bn a year, for 8,000 jobs. Glasgow city council's direct aid for job creation each year is £1bn and with that they create 50,000 jobs. It's a win win situation. Close down Faslane and spend the money on jobs.

"We've closed down Faslane for one day – I want to close it down for the other 364."

Bruce Kent:

"This is the 15th time I've been here – I was arrested last time. Nothing came of it, bar a day in Glasgow police station. I thought there was aa real lack of talk of militarisation in the Live 8 events at the weekend.

"But the NGOs have a responsibility to put militarisation on the map, because within six months or so, Tony Blair is going to make a decision on Trident's replacement, which will cost billions.

"Trident itself was only supposed to cost £5bn when it was first proposed in 1980. To buy a replacment system would be a legal violation of our obligation to negotiate to reduce our nuclear capacity. But our so called independent nuclear British deterrent is none of those things – it's not independent, and who's it deterring?

"I'm surprised the Liberal Democrats aren't here today – there's a real opportunity now for them to be the peace and justice party in the wake of their stance on the Iraq war. Because if even Michael Portillo and Roy Hattersley agree that a Trident replacment would be a waste of money, there's a real coalition waiting to be built."
