Tommy Robinson loses libel case against Syrian boy

Tommy Robinson, founder of the English Defence League, has lost a high court libel case brought by Syrian schoolboy Jamal Hijazi.

Videos went viral in 2018 showing Jamal being attacked in the playground at Almondbury School in Huddersfield.

He was also threatened with drowning.

Robinson – whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon - was sued by Jamal after claiming he was “not innocent and he violently attacks young English girls in his school”.

The EDL founder claimed in two Facebook videos which had nearly a million views that the schoolboy had “beat a girl black and blue” and “threatened to stab” another boy at his school - allegations the teenager denies.

Jamal’s lawyers said Robinson’s comments had “a devastating effect” on the schoolboy and his family and forced them to be relocated from the area in 2019.

In a written statement, Jamal Hijazi, said: "I am not the person he says I am and I am bringing this claim to show the truth and who the real Jamal is.

"I am a positive person and always have been, I want to correct people's opinions who have just watched the video so that they know I am not the person the defendant says I am.

"It really upset me because the things he was saying were not true and he was not telling everybody how I actually am.

"I didn't feel like I could do anything to stop this and felt helpless as so many people had seen this and were posting comments about me even though I had never met them."

Robinson represented himself in court and claimed to have “uncovered dozens of accounts of aggressive, abusive and deceitful behaviour” by 18-year-old Jamal.

Referring to the alleged "waterboarding" incident, Robinson added: "Not only was the claimant the bully and not the victim in this incident, he has subsequently been shown to be the aggressor on multiple occasions, indulging in violent and abusive behaviour."

Catrin Evans QC, for Jamal, previously said that Robinson’s comments led to the teenager “facing death threats and extremist agitation”

Jamal Hijazi’s lawyer, Francesca Flood, said: “It took great courage for our client, Jamal Hijazi, to pursue his libel action against such a prominent far-right and anti-Islam activist as Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, better known as Tommy Robinson.

“We are delighted that Jamal has been entirely vindicated.

“Jamal and his family now wish to put this matter behind them in order that they can get on with their lives.

“They do, however, wish to extend their gratitude to the great British public for their support and generosity, without which this legal action would not have been possible.”

Jamal was awarded £100,000 in damages.
