Tommy Robinson has been jailed for contempt of court

English Defence League founder Tommy Robinson has been jailed for contempt of court.

The 36-year-old has been sentenced to nine months for contempt of court on Thursday, July 11, after broadcasting outside a child grooming trial.

Real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, Robinson filmed defendants in a trial and broadcast it on Facebook in May last year.

Dame Victoria Sharp said that the reason for the penalty for contempt was "punishment and deterrence" and that the court is also determined to uphold the rule of law and "ensure future compliance with orders of the court."

Passing sentence, Dame Victoria said: "We are in no doubt that the custody threshold is crossed in this case, in particular having regard to the common law contempt that the respondent committed.

"Nothing less than a custodial penalty would properly reflect the gravity of the conduct we have identified."

The judge also added that Robinson cannot have a reduction for admission or guilt or for remorse.

She said: "The respondent (Robinson) cannot be given credit for pleading guilty. He has lied about a number of matters and sought to portray himself as the victim of unfairness and oppression.

"This does not increase his sentence, but it does mean that there can be no reduction for an admission of guilt."

His Telegram account said: "Sentenced to prison for journalism. Time for protests to start, this is an absolute joke!"

It added: "Protest outside whatever prison I'm in on Saturday please."

Robinson's sentence was reduced to 19 weeks as Dame Victoria took into account the time he previously spent behind bars for the contempt.

He will serve half before being released.

Robinson arrived at the court wearing a t-shirt which read 'Convicted of journalism'. He also stopped to meet supporters waiting outside and take selfies.
