Tommy Robinson event erupts into violence as 'bricks and eggs thrown into crowd'

Police cars were smashed up and objects were thrown into the crowd as violence broke out at a Tommy Robinson event in Manchester.

Hundreds of people gathered as the far right extremist arrived in Oldham this evening.

Witnesses reported seeing objects being launched into the crowds as tensions flared between Robinson's supporters and critics on the residential roads around Seventh Avenue, the Manchester Evening News reports .

Scores of police officers, armed with shields and batons, attempted to separate the two groups.

An eyewitness, who didn't want to be named, said: "I saw bricks being thrown into the crowds. There were police with shields and batons, and the Tactical Aid Unit were there.

"There were several dozen police. At the start there were eggs being thrown, but then people turned to bricks."

The EDL founder is campaigning to become an MEP in the European Elections.

Earlier this month, a member of the public was filmed throwing a milkshake at the far right activist during a previous visit to Warrington.

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police confirmed damage was caused to two police cars.

She said no one was injured, but officers would remain in the area for "some time".

She added: "Today, Saturday, May 18, during a planned event in Oldham, officers responded accordingly to a disturbance in the Lime Side area.

"A number of objects were thrown and some damage has been caused to two police vehicles but there have not been reported injuries.

"We are aware of a number of videos that are circulating online showing the disturbance but this has now been brought to a close.

"Officers will remain in the area for some time."
