Tommy McCarthy targets Mairis Briedis after winning European title

Tommy McCarthy says he wants Mairis Briedis next after battling past Bilal Laggoune to claim the EBU European cruiserweight title on Saturday night.

The Belfast boxer prevailed following a gruelling 12-round contest at Wembley Arena in London.

McCarthy claimed a majority decision win - one judge scored it a 114-114 draw, with two in favour of the 29-year-old, 116-112 and 116-113.

It was an impressive display from McCarthy who showed heart and class to inflict Laggoune's second defeat as a pro.

Speaking afterwards, McCarthy said he wanted to challenge for a world title next.

And he has set his sights on IBF champion Briedis.

"I'm the first Irish black European champion and it is Black History Month as well," McCarthy beamed afterwards.

"I am the king, and the toughest man in Europe now. I want Mairis Briedis who is the best cruiserweight in the world. That's who I want next.

"I am just loving it, I am delighted."

He added: "I know I am calm and all, because I am easy going. But I am buzzing inside, so my thoughts are all over the place. I am delighted with myself. And with West Belfast behind me as well, yeeoooo!

"Listen, that was hectic in there. But I am coming back to Belfast as the European champion. I know all the bars are closed, but when they open up again don't forget about me.

"I will want everyone to buy me a pint. I won't be bringing out my wallet. I don't usually bring my wallet anyway, but I am definitely not bringing it next time."
