Tommy McCarthy ready to back up Carl Frampton hype in Manchester

Tommy McCarthy is ready to add some substance to Carl Frampton's claims that he can become Belfast's next big boxing star.

Frampton believes European cruiserweight champion McCarthy can become a household figure in his home city, much like the Jackal was during his own glittering career.

The 30-year-old returns to action on Saturday night when he defends his EBU European cruiserweight title at the AO Arena in Manchester.

And while McCarthy says victory is his primary goal, he accepts winning in style is also important if he wants to bolster his own reputation.

"Carl says I have the punch, the ability, the personality and the looks. If he said it, I agree with it," McCarthy joked.

"You obviously need talent and boxing ability, but you also need personality and charisma. And it's also about how you're marketed and managed.

"I have Mark Dunlop who is a brilliant manager, probably the best in the world. He will get me the right fights and market me the right way, and hopefully get the Belfast public to come out and watch me."

McCarthy defends his European title against Alexandru Jur, looking to make it five wins on the bounce since losing to Richard Riakporhe back in 2019.

"I expect a tough test," McCarthy said.

"Jur is experienced and has won a couple of titles. He has also been in with world class opponents. He's coming off a win himself so will be confident.

"But so am I."
