Tommy Fury told he may never be "an elite boxer" ahead of Jake Paul fight

Top Rank CEO Bob Arum is unsure if Tommy Fury will ever be an "elite boxer" ahead of his grudge fight with Jake Paul on December 18.

Fury has won seven fights since turning professional in 2018 but has fought limited competition in his young career.

The Love Island star secured a fight with Paul after outpointing the internet personality's sparring partner Anthony Taylor in a sluggish display earlier this year.

Paul headlined that event in Cleveland when he narrowly scraped past former UFC star Tyron Woodley by split decision.

And Arum - who co-promotes Tommy's brother WBC heavyweight champion Tyson - thinks Fury vs Paul does nothing for the sport of boxing.

“We don’t know if Tommy Fury would ever be an elite boxer. I mean, I could think of dozens of young light-heavyweights who would beat him," Arum told talkSPORT.

“So you know, it’s irrelevant to me whether he wins or loses. Because he’s Tyson Fury ’s brother, I absolutely hope that he wins. And I wish him the best. But if he loses, he loses.”

“Obviously, these are not elite fighters. They’re almost like circus acts. But again, if people are influenced to watch them, nobody is putting a gun to anybody’s head. And I think it’s neither good – nor bad – for the sport of boxing."

Fury - the betting favourite against Paul - claimed he's been backed by former title contender and Olympic medalist Andre Dirrell to beat Paul.

Paul turned professional last year and has since become the most talked about name in combat sports.

The brash 24-year-old has called out UFC stars such as Conor McGregor and has staked his claim at becoming a future world titleholder.

And Fury thinks Paul's team are relying on him getting cold feet due to the magnitude of the event on December 18.

"They are banking on me to get shaky legs and twitchy before the fight but it isn't happening," he told Queensbury Promotions.

"They have looked at my last fight and thank god they have, because all I am going to say to the millions of people watching, is that you have to do certain things to get certain fights.

"If they have been stupid enough to fall for that trap which they have because I am sitting here now, let them keep watching that fight. I am going to come out like a caged animal because this is the fight that I wanted.

"Would knocking his sparring partner clean out have got me this fight? No it wouldn't, he would have run a mile. This game is about brains and I have a lot more than him clearly."
