One of the stars of Netflix's 13 Reasons Why, Tommy Dorfman, has revealed she has been "privately identifying" as a trans woman for over a year.
Dorfman is best known for a supporting role in 13 Reasons Why, where she played Ryan Shaver, but has also appeared in a recurring role on Jane the Virgin.
In an interview with Time Magazine, she said she did not see the revelation as a "coming out".
"Coming out is always viewed as this grand reveal, but I was never not out," she said.
"Today is about clarity: I am a trans woman. My pronouns are she/her. My name is Tommy."
Posting the news to her 1.4 million Instagram followers, Dorfman said she was "especially grateful to every single trans person who walked this path, broke down barriers, and risked their lives to live authentically and radically as themselves before me".
Many of Dorfman's previous Instagram posts suggested she was transitioning.
Dorfman told the magazine she was no longer interested in playing male roles.
Unlike many people who identify as transgender, Dorfman said she would keep her first name "Tommy".
It comes months after one of the transgender community's most visible public transitions — that of actor Elliot Page.
The star of Juno and The Umbrella Academy announced publicly that he identified as male in December last year.
Crown actor Emma Corrin, who played a young Princess Diana in the Netflix series, this month changed their pronouns to they/them.
