Tommie Hoban set for Aberdeen training return as former defender steps up comeback bid

Tommie Hoban admits he’s delighted to be getting the chance to return to Aberdeen.

The defender, a free agent since his release from Watford last summer, is closing in on full fitness and set to return to Pittodrie to train with the Dons.

The luckless 26-year-old has been out injured for a year since he suffered a sickening knee injury while on loan at Aberdeen.

Hoban said: “I am now back on grass and stepping up my training.

“I spoke to my agent and there were a few options where I could go in and train. I told him I’d prefer to go somewhere familiar.

Derek McInnes had always said I could come back up and train and Aberdeen would do everything they can to help which is great.”

The former Republic of Ireland Under-21 cap has had a nightmare run.

Hoban suffered a cruciate-ligament injury at Watford, got back to fitness and went up to the Dons.

He was then sidelined with a shoulder problem and came back and did the cruciate in his other knee.

He had surgery but that then needed another procedure. Hoban said: “At times I thought, ‘Is this all worth it?’”
