Tommie Hoban set for Aberdeen return as defender takes up Derek McInnes' rehab offer

Tommie Hoban has accepted Aberdeen's offer to use their training facilities and could join the club if he proves his fitness.

The former Watford defender had a loan spell at the Dons last season but a cruciate ligament injury ended his season early and he's currently working his way back.

He won't be fully fit until later in the year but Hoban is a free agent and could sign a deal if Derek McInnes feels he's ready.

The Pittodrie gaffer refused to rule out a deal for the Irishman when he confirmed he would be training with the club.

McInnes told the Evening Express: “Tommie has indicated he will take us up on our invitation to come up over the next two to three weeks to do some training with us.

“Tommie is still working through his rehab. It is too premature that it is something that would automatically happen.

“But it is not something that we think definitely wouldn’t happen either. I enjoyed working with Tommie and he enjoyed working here.

“Tommie got a sore injury in an Aberdeen strip and there is a duty of care we feel.

“And a feeling from us that we would like to try and help him.”

The 25-year-old even travelled to the Scottish Cup semi-final with the rest of the Aberdeen squad despite being in the middle of his rehab with Watford.

McInnes is struggling with injury issues this season with Scott McKenna, Ash Taylor, Stephen Gleeson, Scott Wright, Craig Bryson, Jon Gallagher and Funso Ojo all out with various issues.
