'Tombstoning' deaths: Two men pulled from the sea in Torquay named

An inquest has been opened into the deaths of two men who were pulled from the sea off a popular tourist beach.

The casualties were named at the short hearing as Matthew Berry and Daniel Harris who both lived together but lost their lives after getting into trouble at Babbacombe Beach last Thursday.

Mr Berry, 25 and Mr Harris, 26, were both pronounced dead later the same day.

At the inquest, which was opened and adjourned by coroner Louise Wiltshire, it was noted that there were no suspicious circumstances but at this stage the medical cause of death was not ascertained.

Mr Berry was described as single and unemployed while Mr Harris was described as single and a software developer.

Further toxicology and histology tests are set to be carried out.

A full inquest will take place later this year.

An investigation by Devon and Cornwall Police is still underway and anyone with information about the matter is urged to contact police on 101 quoting log 552 of 27/6/2019.
