Friends, it’s been a long, heated debate about which of the two sauces, tomato or BBQ, is superior. But the sauce gods themselves, MasterFoods, have taken the debate one step further and surveyed the people to determine what your sauce preference actually says about you.
The very serious research by MasterFoods surveyed over 1000 Aussies nationwide, and found that tomato sauce lovers are mostly described as a “safe pair of hands”, “classic” and “reliable”.
Barbecue, on the other hand, is Australia’s wildcard, with people viewing it as an “adventurous, creative, and edgy choice”, with nearly half of Australians saying it “adds something different”. Ya don’t say????

After what we can only assume was a very interesting line of questioning, some clear personalities started to form around the two sauces.
Tomato-Coded = The friend you trust your life with and want as a lifelong bestie. Apparently, 49 per cent would trust them to dress them for an important event??!
Barbecue-Coded = The friend who “brings the vibe” to a dinner party and takes things to the next level on a night out. We’ve all got one of ~those~.
According to the research, BBQ sauce people are also more likely to ghost someone, which makes me feel very justified in my judgement of BBQ sauce lovers in the line at Bunnings.
While tomato sauce still dominates traditional staples like meat pies, the humble sausage sizzle, hot chips, and B&E rolls have apparently become battlegrounds where Aussies are increasingly opting for barbecue sauce. Blasphemy!
A quick poll in the office group chat tells me that there are now at least three colleagues I look at differently because of their sauce choices.
I also wanna know what goes on in the brains of people who rawdog their beloved meals without any sauce. Those people should be in your next study, MasterFoods.
