Tomato prices drop to Rs 80 per kg in Kolhapur

KOLHAPUR: Price of tomatoes in the retail market of Kolhapur city has come down from Rs 100 per kg to around Rs 80 per kg providing some relief to the people.

The cost of tomatoes had breached the Rs100-mark few days ago after supply of the produce was affected due to unseasonal showers. Umesh Mhaske, a farmer from Shirol, said, “Last year in December tomatoes were sold between Rs 2 and Rs 6 per kilogram. Due to this very reason farmers refrained from cultivating tomatoes. There is less area under tomato cultivation and if the temperature goes above 37 degrees Celsius the harvest gets affected. This time around the extreme weather conditions — rain and scorching heat — has also assisted in lesser production of tomatoes.”

Ravindra Patil, a vegetable seller in Shahupuri market, said, “Price of tomatoes continue to remain on the higher side as the supply has been affected. Even when the tomato prices are high, onion and potato prices are still in normal range.”
