Tomas Kalas posts fitness update as Bristol City defender looks set to miss Luton Town game

Tomas Kalas has given an update on his fitness with Bristol City hoping that the central defender returns to action before the end of the month.

The Czech Republic international showed that he has returned to training on the grass in an Instagram post, while he also shared a picture of himself working hard in the gym alongside Korey Smith, too.

However, the 26-year-old former Chelsea man explained that he's not yet in full training - but hopes to be soon. And it appears that he is only in the initial stages of on-field rehabilitation currently.

That will almost certainly rule him out of the weekend's game at Luton Town, with Kalas yet to resume playing matches.

"Working my way back and counting hours till I can join @bristolcityfc boys in full training session," he said on Instagram.

Previously head coach Lee Johnson had revealed that he hoped Kalas might make the trip to Kenilworth Road. But having not played in Tuesday's behind closed doors friendly against Torquay, that looks unlikely for the club's record signing.

Bristol Live has been told that Johnson insists on players playing two matches before they can return to senior action.

"If everything goes to plan, Tomas will work really hard and be integrated in that second week of international break, ready for the Luton game (on October 19, after the international break)," said the City boss following the recent 3-3 draw at Preston.

With Kalas yet to start any ball work, that looks highly unlikely now.

Bristol City face Charlton Athletic at Ashton Gate on Wednesday in a week's time and it might be that the defensive rock is available for that game instead if he plays some matches before then.

City may be boosted by the arrival of Spanish striker Rodri for the weekend however.
