Tomahawk opens 'roasthouse' in Jesmond serving hangover-busting takeaway roast dinners

The team behind Tomahawk Steakhouse have now opened a 'roasthouse' serving hangover-busting takeaway roast dinners in Jesmond.

The Tomahawk Roasthouse opened its doors earlier this month after taking over the former Filmore & Union cafe on Newcastle's Acorn Road.

It is owned by the same team which has Tomahawk Steakhouses in Ponteland and Newcastle's Quayside, as well as the Rio Brazilian Steakhouse on Osborne Road in Jesmond.

The venue has 20 seats in a "canteen syle" cafe, so customers can eat in as well as take away.

The star of the show is the roast dinners - with three roast meats a day that can either be served with all the trimmings in a giant Yorkshire pudding, in a Yorkshire pudding wrap, or in a bap.

Another house special is the chicken shawarma, which comes in a wrap, a pasta box, a jacket potato, or with salad and slaw.

The cafe also serves breakfast from 8am until 11am, including breakfast stotties and 'Colombian eggs'.

Pasta pots and jacket potatoes are also on the menu, and from 12pm it will be serving flat iron steak with chimichurri sauce.

Managing director Howard Eggleston described the roasthouse as "easygoing, fast service takeaway".

He said: "We're hoping the students will be the driving force.

"The student element was our prime thought, but it opened after the students went home for Christmas and the locals have really taken to it. People have been coming in for a coffee and reading the papers."

Mr Eggleston said other plans in the pipeline include opening another Rio - a Brazilian churrasco-style steakhouse where meats are carved and served at the table - in Newcastle city centre, "if we can find the right location".

"We can't believe how busy the one in Jesmond has been, it's surprised us all," he said.

The company is also looking at opening a Rio in Durham and a Tomahawk Steakhouse in Morpeth.
