Tom Silvagni, 23, has been sentenced to six years and two months in prison for two counts of rape after a jury found him guilty earlier this month of impersonating a friend to enter a bedroom at his family home, where he attacked a woman and attempted to conceal his actions.
The Melbourne man, who appeared via videolink from custody, was handed a minimum sentence of three years and three months. Judge Gregory Lyon noted that his actions were defined by “deception and deflection”, highlighting the deliberate attempts to mislead and cover up his crimes following the attack.
In court, Lyon said Silvagni had shown “no remorse”, describing his actions as egregious and highlighting his lack of empathy toward the victim.
“You have demonstrated no remorse and no insight into any aspect of your wrongdoing,” the judge said. “Not the rapes, not altering the Uber receipt or your later conduct.
“Successful rehabilitation requires both.”

Lyon also praised the victim’s courage for appearing in court in person to face Silvagni and deliver her impact statement in which she described Silvagni as “calculated” and “evil”.
Rape carries a maximum sentence of 25 years, though convictions typically result in seven to 10 years.
Lyon allowed the sentencing to be broadcast live after Silvagni’s identity had been suppressed for over a year.
During the trial, the court heard that on January 13, 2024, the victim visited Silvagni’s family home in Balwyn North, Melbourne while his parents were away. After socialising with Silvagni, his girlfriend, and a male friend, the victim and the friend went to a bedroom, where they had consensual sex before he left around 2am.
Silvagni then entered the room in the dark, impersonated his friend, and raped her twice despite her protests. He later attempted to cover up the crime by altering the friend’s Uber receipt to mislead investigators. Silvagni admitted to doctoring the receipt but denied entering the bedroom.
A suppression order on his identity, granted after his June 2024 charge, remained in place even after his conviction.
Silvagni is the youngest son of Carlton legend Stephen Silvagni and former TV host Jo, and the grandson of Blues Hall of Famer Sergio Silvagni.
