Tom Brady doesn't lose often, but the six-time Super Bowl champ took another 'L' this week.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark office has rejected Brady's attempt to trademark "Tom Terrific" on the basis that Mets legend Tom Seaver is still alive, and is the real Tom Terrific.
The Patriots quarterback claimed in June that "I was actually trying to do something because I didn't like the nickname and I wanted to make sure no one used it because some people wanted to use it."
Despite saying "I'll try to do things a little different in the future" then, though Brady apparently did not drop his trademark application.
That application was rejected Thursday in a ruling posted on the USPTO website. It's now officially the position of the United States that "the mark TOM TERRIFIC points uniquely and unmistakably to the identification of Tom Seaver and the fame of Tom Seaver as 'Tom Terrific' is such that a connection between Mr. Seaver and the applied-for goods is presumed."
Seaver, a three-time Cy Young winner and '69 World Series champ with the Mets, was diagnosed with dementia in March of this year. His family said he'd no longer make any public appearances. Shortly after that, the Mets and New York renamed Citi Field's street as Seaver Way, and the franchise announced plans for a statue to honor The Franchise.
