Tom Scullion tributes paid following death of former Derry GAA player and manager

Derry GAA have announced the death of former player and manager Tom Scullion.

The Bellaghy Wolfe Tones man was a 12-time Derry senior Championship winner and also claimed Ulster senior Championship titles as a player and manager at county level.

Scullion, 81, won the Ulster SFC with the Oak Leafers in 1958 before guiding his county to provincial success in 1987 as they beat Derry 0-11 to 0-9 in the final in Clones.

He was part of the management team alongside Jim McKeever and Phil Stuart but their All-Ireland quest fell at the semi-final hurdle against eventual winners Meath.

He was part of the Bellaghy side who claimed the All-Ireland club title in 1972 and was a member of the first Queen’s University team to win the Sigerson Cup in 1958.

“Derry GAA are saddened to learn of the death of Tom Scullion, a legend of club and county. A former vice-chairman of Derry GAA, Tom Scullion was revered by all Derry Gaels," said a Derry statement.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Tom’s family and friends. Derry has lost a truly great man."
