Tom Parker was 'petrified' over first The Wanted gig in seven years amid cancer battle

By Charlotte Tutton

Tom Parker has opened up about his reunion with his band The Wanted, in a new documentary airing on Sunday that follows his cancer journey.

Tom Parker: Inside My Head follows the singer and wife Kelsey, as the pair allow cameras into their home as they continue to learn to live with Tom’s Stage 4 cancer diagnosis.

In October 2020, Tom was diagnosed with an inoperable glioblastoma, an aggressive brain tumour, following a seizure a few months prior.

Since then, Tom has undergone treatment for his brain cancer including cycles of chemotherapy, with him recently revealing that the tumour has shrunk.

Tom is keen to remain positive and defy the odds, and the documentary follows him, Kelsey and their two young children as Tom opens up on his diagnosis, and his treatment.

In one clip, Tom and Kelsey are seen looking over Tom's brain scans , and they share their hope over his stable condition.

In another video, Tom reunites with his band mates from The Wanted, Max George, Siva Kaneswaran, Jay McGuiness and Nathan Sykes.

Following his diagnosis and ongoing treatment, Tom decided to organise a star-studded charity concert where the boys would perform - which took place in September.

Arranging the event at the Royal Albert Hall, Tom's aim was to raise awareness about brain tumours with the support of his loved ones.

But it was pretty nerve-wrecking for Tom, he confessed prior to the performance, as he confides in his pals ahead of their first on-stage performance as a group in seven years in a new clip from the documentary.

Tom tells Jay and the others he is "petrified" in the lead-up to the big event during a Zoom call filmed for the episode, with Jay reassuring him all will be fine.

Jay confesses: "It is probably about six or seven years since we were last on stage together," with Nathan replying: "Christ, that long?"

Tom says: "I'm genuinely petrified," but Jay then tells him: "I was petrified all the time anyway, it will be fine."

Tom then confesses all on his close bond with the boys after their band days, and says things have not changed between them.

He explains: "What I love about the boys, even when we've not seen each other for years it's like nothing's ever changed. I just love that."

Tom Parker: Inside My Head is on Channel 4 on Sunday 10 October at 9pm.
