Tom Nesbitt of legendary Dublin bar Doheny and Nesbitt passes away

Legendary bar owner Tom Nesbitt passed away last Saturday.

The Tipperary man ran the famous Doheny and Nesbitt bar on Dublin’s Baggot Street with fellow Tipp native, the late Ned Doheny.

Described as “Wiley Ned Doheny and pragmatic Tom Nesbitt," the pair ran the acclaimed bar together for decades until retiring in 1987.

When Tom and Ned were in charge, it was one of a handful of “Tipperary pubs” in Dublin city centre and its proximity to the Dáil meant politicians were regulars.

Former TD Noel Coonan paid tribute to Tom and said that Doheny and Nesbitt "was a popular haunt with members of the Oireachtas” during the exciting times of the 70s and 80s.

“If you couldn't contact a Minister, then Doheny and Nesbitt's was always a great place to catch them off guard."

According to the pub website, one can easily muse on Ireland’s past Writers and Politicians debating and plotting in the bar’s “hallowed surroundings.

“Writers and Politicians from the nearby Dail or House of Parliament still frequent this pub, as do journalists, lawyers, architects and actors, along with a myriad of visitors from around the globe.”

The Tipperary native lived in Clontarf and passed away peacefully on May 29 at St Gabriel’s Nursing Home.

He will be missed by his “soulmate” Beatrice, his four children and children-in-law, his grandchildren, his siblings and all his family and many friends.

Tom Nesbitt’s funeral took place on Wednesday morning.
