Tom Lockyer is not a current target for Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest are not understood to be among the clubs currently targeting a move for free agent Tom Lockyer.

The Reds have been heavily linked with the right back or central defender, who is out of contract at Bristol Rovers - and had been monitoring his position this time last year, during Aitor Karanka’s tenure at the City Ground.

But Lockyer is not understood to be high on Martin O’Neill’s list of targets, as he looks to bolster his options for the coming campaign, during his first full transfer window at the club.

The player himself has confirmed that there are a group of four second tier clubs keen on signing him, as well as handful in League One, as he ponders his options after deciding to bring an end to his time at the Memorial Ground.

Forest do want to sign a right back to provide competition for Tendayi Darikwa, but their preferred option is understood to be West Ham defender Sam Byram, who they are keen to bring back to the City Ground for a second spell, following his season long loan move.

And, while versatile Lockyer is also a highly regarded central defender, Forest are very well stocked in that position, where they are likely to look to trim their options, rather than add to them.

Forest may revive their previous interest in Lockyer, but only if they are unable to land other targets and, for now, the City Ground is an unlikely destination for the 24-year-old.

Welsh international Lockyer made 238 appearances for Rovers, after coming through the youth ranks with the Gas. But he believes he is ready for a fresh start - and to test himself at a level higher than League One.

“It's about weighing things up at the minute, it's too easy to rush into things and get sucked in by certain aspects of different clubs,” he told the Bristol Post.

"Realistically there are four Championship teams who are willing to put something on the table and there's a few other League One teams.

"I've got to go away with Wales this summer so it will be nice to have something done before that, whether we'll able to or not will be a different story."
