Tom Jones' Bristol gig hangs in balance as council raises objections

It’s Not Unusual for Bristol City Council licensing sub-committee to hold a hearing with anyone.

But next week, the fate of pop superstar Tom Jones’s concert at the green, green grass of the County Ground will be in their hands.

Officers from two of the council’s own departments — pollution control and the licensing authority — have made “representations”, in other words, objections, about the music idol’s show at Gloucestershire County Cricket Club in Nevill Road in Bishopston on Saturday, July 13.

Why, why, why have they raised concerns?

The local authority says they are to do with the conditions of staging and the infrastructure of such a big gig, although officers will outline these further at the hearing on Thursday, June 20.

Events company LHG Live has applied for a premises licence for the concert, including live and recorded music, dance performances and the sale of alcohol from 4pm to 11pm, plus an extra half hour for the bar in the corporate hospitality suites at the pavilion.

It is also seeking permission for sound checks of no more than two hours between midday and 12pm the day before and the day of the legendary Welsh singer’s show.

Tom Jones’s many hits include Delilah, She’s a Lady, Sex Bomb and It’s Not Unusual.

He has amassed more than 100 million record sales in a career spanning six decades, received a knighthood in 2006 and is a coach on ITV talent show The Voice.

After the Bristol gig, the 79-year-old will head to Colchester and Dundee for two more concerts.
