Tom James ruled out for several weeks with ankle ligament damage

Tom James is expected to be out for several weeks after sustaining ankle ligament damage in Hibs’ 1-0 win over St Mirren.

The Welshman had to be withdrawn on the stroke of half-time after being hurt in a challenge by St Mirren winger Ilkay Durmus.

Manager Paul Heckingbottom believed the Turkish player should have been sent off for the tackle.

Hibs had been hopeful that James hadn’t sustained any serious damage, but further examination revealed that the 23-year-old had damaged ankle ligaments and will be missing for several weeks.

It is likely Steven Whittaker will now move to right back for this Sunday’s visit to Ibrox to play Rangers, with Sean Mackie coming in on the left hand side of defence.

Lewis Stevenson is back in light training although this weekend's game may come to soon for him, with David Gray in a similar situation.

Heckingbottom was naturally disappointed to lose James but remains hopeful he could be fit ahead of schedule if treatment goes well.

“It’s a shame for Tom because he’s settled in well since signing in the summer and worked had to earn a starting slot in that first league game against St Mirren," he said.

“We hope he responds well to treatment and we won’t be without him for too long.

“In the meantime, it gives someone else an opportunity to stake their claim.”
