Along with an announcement that Michigan State’s basketball team will no longer be traveling to Spain this summer, Michigan State also announced that Tom Izzo will be playing in the Rocket Mortgage Classic pro-am golf tournament, the AREA 313 Celebrity Challenge, next week.
The Rocket Mortgage Classic is the PGA Tour event that will be replacing the Quicken Loans National on the PGA Tour schedule and will be played at the Detroit Golf Club. The AREA 313 Celebrity Challenge is played next to the pro tournament and consists of three teams playing in holes 14-16.
Izzo will be on Bubba Watson’s team along with Jimmy Howard and Troy Mullins. Kid Rock, Dylan Larkin, Jerome Bettis, and Justin Abdelkader are some of the other local celebrities participating.
Izzo commented on his golf abilities back in April:
“Whenever I get over triple digits, I just kind of throw the card away. I don’t remember, but it was a fun time. My AD, Mark Hollis, took us, and Kirk Herbstreit went. We had a little football-basketball, and we had a good time. Kirk Cousins is a pretty good golfer too. Me, I’m just a ham and egg guy, kind of slap it around a little bit and hopefully stay out of trouble. You know, when you don’t hit it that far, you’re never in the woods, so I was never in trouble anyway.”
