Tom Izzo responds to criticism of having his son on his team: ‘Haters gonna hate’

When the Michigan State Spartans Men’s Basketball team released their 2019-20 roster, it came with one surprise. That surprise was that Steven Izzo, the son of head coach Tom Izzo, made the team as a walk-on. When the news broke, many fans, including myself, thought it was a cool story. However, there were a few detractors, who Izzo responded to in a recent press conference.

“Haters gonna hate,” Izzo said.

Izzo has often publicly lamented the amount of time he misses with his family due to his position, and Steven’s position as a walk-on is a cool way for him to spend more time with his family (and it doesn’t impact the team or anyone else’s chances to make the team at all).

“Does it bother me? Yeah,” Izzo said in a recent interview. “I think I saw four games his senior year. And his high school is four blocks from me.”

I think this is an awesome story for the team and I’m happy for coach. Haters gonna hate, but I’ll happily debate anyone on Twitter who wants to argue with the man for wanting to spend more time with his son.
