Tom Hooper and Eddie Redmayne to reunite on The Danish Girl

The King's Speech director Tom Hooper is to reunite with Birdsong actor Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl, an adaptation of the novel by David Ebershoff about pioneering transgender artist Einar Wegener.

First published in 2000, The Danish Girl is a fictionalised account of Wegener's relationship with fellow painter Gerda Gottlieb. The pair were married in 1904 before Wegener's then-experimental gender reassignment surgery in Germany in 1930. Wegener re-emerged as Lili Elbe and the marriage was dissolved the same year. Elbe died in 1931 after a failed attempt to transplant a uterus.

Hooper and Redmayne previously worked together on Les Misérables, the blockbuster film musical in which Redmayne played Marius, the student who marries Cosette. Like Les Misérables, The Danish Girl is due to be produced by UK outfit Working Title.
