Tom Holland, of Kingston upon Thames, Surrey will be the next actor to play New York’s favourite web-slinging son, Spider-Man, according to Variety.

Holland, who co-starred with Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor in Boxing Day tsunami drama The Impossible, was one of six teenage actors being considered for the role, three of whom were British. Among those he swung ahead of was rumoured front-runner Asa Butterfield, star of Hugo and Ender’s Game.

The 19-year-old is likely to first appear as the character in a cameo role in Marvel’s upcoming Captain America sequel, Civil War, with standalone Spider-Man films to follow. Sony announced a partnership deal with Marvel in February, allowing the character to join Marvel heroes on screen.

Holland takes over the role from Andrew Garfield, who starred in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man and last year’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Garfield was critical of Sony Pictures, the studio that owns the property for “breaking the thread” of the second film’s story.

The Amazing Spider-Man films were part of a reboot of a modern take on the character pioneered by director Sam Raimi with his trilogy, which ran from 2002-7 and starred Tobey Maguire.

The first standalone film from the new Spider-Man franchise, directed by Jon Watts, will be released worldwide on 28 July 2017.
