Tom Hanks ' son Chet has hit back at critics who accused him of cultural appropriation in another video of him speaking in Jamaican patois.
Chet Hanks was an unlikely talking point at the Golden Globes on Sunday night after stunning fans with his red carpet interview.
The 29-year-old aspiring rapper-turned-actor spoke in patois and used some interesting hand gestures as he walked the red carpet Sunday night in support of his Oscar-winning father, who was being presented with a lifetime achievement award .
He caused a Twitter storm after sharing the video where he is heard hyping up his father speaking in Jamaican patois, an English-based creole language - despite being born and raised in Los Angeles.
The video was captioned on his account with "BIG UP FIMI WHOL FAMILY COM AT DI AWARDS NA SEEN CHUNE IN"
Chet's mother Rita commented in the replies: "Maybe the best laugh of the night."
Responding to media reports of how his video had been received Chet - who released a rap song in 2011 under the name Chet Haze - said he was in a state of disbelief.
He captioned a link to a news report about his post: “Average citizens: damn this is scary I can’t believe we’re on the verge of WW3 let me check the news smh [shaking my head].”
Chet has now posted a second video of him speaking patois as he left a juice bar.
He said: “Me wake up this morning and me see the thing turn up.The internet gone mad!”
He captioned the post: “RESPECT TO MI #ISLAND MASSIVE … RRRRRRRHHHHHHHHH”
It is not known what prompted Chet's outburst at the Golden Globes, but , who set the internet ablaze.
One slammed the video: “When you suck at everything and indulge in white privilege that much, your dad and mom have to take you with them to an awards show so you don’t f*** up the house while they are out. #ChetHanks "
Another commented: "Is Chet Hanks guilty of cultural appropriation, cultural appreciation, or just thinking that he is Drake? "
Chanté Griffin said: “It’s another example of white folx thinking than can say whatever they want simply because they’re black-adjacent: Chet plays the rapper Blake on FOX’s Empire , and his daughter, Michaiah is black.
“But proximity to blackness doesn’t grant permission to mimic it.”
In 2015, Chet came under fire for a series of Instagram posts defending the use of the n-word.
He said at the time (via Billboard ): "I know the majority of y'all are not going to get this because the history is still so fresh in our country.
"But hip-hop isn't about race — it's about the culture you identify with. Can't no one tell me what I can't say."
He added: "Who is to say only black people can use it?"
