Oct. 01--Tom Hanks' son Chet Hanx said Wednesday he has been in rehab for substance abuse, putting to rest weeks of speculation in tabloid media that the Northwestern University alumnus had gone missing.
"I've been in rehab, right. I'm just trying to get my (expletive) together. And I'm doing pretty damn good," Hanx said in a video posted to Instagram Wednesday.
Hanx, who was born Chester Hanks and has also gone by the name Chet Haze, posted a series of videos on his Instagram page discussing rehab and apologizing for saying it is his right to use a racial slur.
"The truth is, it's not my place to speak on that. And I'm genuinely sorry for the people that I offended," Hanx posted about his use of the slur, which received backlash on social media.
Hanx, 25, said Wednesday he was selling and snorting cocaine a few months ago.
"I just had to really take a look at myself and my life and the way (expletive) was going and all the crazy stupid (expletive) I was doing and just finally admit to myself that it wasn't working, and I had to try something new and that thing was to not do any drugs or alcohol," he said.
"It's been a long journey for me discovering who I am because of all the pressures that I've dealt with in my life, you know, being the son of my dad and everything and just trying to find where I fit in," Hanx said.
The rapper may be best known for "White and Purple," his Northwestern anthem that went viral in 2011.
