Tom Hanks shows off his donated blood plasma in fight against coronavirus

Tom Hanks shared a picture showing a bag of the blood plasma he donated to researchers after overcoming coronavirus.

The 63-year-old Hollywood star and his wife Rita Wilson were both diagnosed with Covid-19 last month and have since made a full recovery.

Tom has donated his plasma - the liquid part of the blood - to scientists in California treating patients still fighting the disease, as it is rich in antibodies.

The plasma from former patients are perfect as the antibodies develop during the recovery from an illness.

The Forrest Gump actor posted a picture of a bulging bag of the yellow liquid and wrote: "Here's last week's bag of plasma. Such a bag! After the paperwork, it's as easy as taking a nap."

He thanked UCLA and epidemiologist Anne Rimoin, a public health professor and director of the Centre for Global and Immigrant Health at the university.

Patients in the UK who have recovered from Covid-19 have also begun donating their plasma.

Hanks and Wilson were diagnosed with the virus while in Australia filming an Elvis Presley biopic he will star in.

They were placed in quarantine Down Under and had to stay in the country for several weeks after being hospitalised and then recuperating in a rented home before being allowed to return to the their LA home.

Speaking on NPR's podcast Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! Tom gave an update as to how he and Rita are now feeling in the aftermath of coronavirus.

The Toy Story star said: "We are just fine, dandy. We had all of the flu-like symptoms. My wife, Rita, was a little worse off than me.

"She had a very high temperature. And we were isolated so that we would not give it to anyone else."
