The makers of “Forrest Gump” decided not to open up another box of chocolates.
Discussions about a possible sequel to the Oscar-winning movie didn’t get very far before being shelved, star Tom Hanks shared on a new episode of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast.
“I will say that, with a long time in between, we did take a stab at talking about another ‘Forrest Gump,’ that lasted all of 40 minutes,” Hanks said on Wednesday’s show.
Hanks stars in the 1994 classic as a simple man who lives an extraordinary life. He won the Oscar for best actor for his performance.
The film won six Oscars overall, including best picture and best director for Robert Zemeckis.
“A smart thing I did was I never signed a contract that had a contractual obligation to a sequel,” Hanks said on the podcast. “I would always say, ‘Guys, look, if there’s reason to do it, then let’s do it. But you guys can’t force me.”
Zemeckis, 70, and Hanks, 66, recently reunited for their fourth movie together, a live-action adaptation of “Pinocchio,” with Hanks playing the wood-carver Geppetto. The film arrived Thursday on Disney+.
Hanks also said on the podcast that he can’t wait to watch “Laal Singh Chaddha,” an Indian adaptation of “Forrest Gump” starring Aamir Khan, which came out in theaters worldwide last month.
