Tom Hanks looks less than impressed with Ricky Gervais' Golden Globes monologue

Tom Hanks inadvertently sparked a brand new meme as he was captured responding to Ricky Gervais’ divisive opening monologue at the Golden Globes 2020.

The veteran actor looked less than impressed by Gervais’ increasingly outrageous remarks as the comedian kicked off his fifth and final Globes ceremony by taking aim at everyone from Felicity Huffman to Leonardo DiCaprio.

Hanks raised his eyebrows and looked tight lipped in one reaction shot during NBC’s telecast, while another shot saw him frowning and starting to laugh.

His fellow attendees Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman, who appeared in the background of the shot, looked similarly nonplussed by Gervais’ signature humour.

Twitter users were quick to draw attention to Hanks’ baffled expression, suggesting that it summed up the reaction of most viewers.

The Office star kick started proceedings by reminding the audience that this was his final outing as host, telling them: “This is the last time I’m hosting these awards, so I don’t care anymore. I’m joking, I never did!”

He then made a dig at Desperate Housewives star Huffman and the college admissions scandal, telling guests that he “came here tonight in a limo, and the license plate was made by Felicity Huffman.”

After pointing out the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s poor track record when it comes to nominating people of colour in major categories, he went on to poke fun at the age difference between Leonardo DiCaprio and his girlfriend.

“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, nearly three hours long,” he said. “Leonardo DiCaprio attended the premiere and by the end, his date was too old for him.”
