Tom Hanks caught in 'angry outburst' during 'heated altercation' with festival staff

Tom Hanks appeared to be caught in a heated exchange with a member of staff at the Cannes Film Festival.

The 66-year-old actor attended the premiere for his new film Asteroid City on Tuesday evening but he certainly didn't look happy as he was seen pointing his finger at the worker.

Tom was joined by his wife Rita Wilson who also looked uncharacteristically frustrated as she was pictured holding her hand up while speaking to the man on the red carpet.

At one point, Tom was seen pointing behind him as he spoke.

The staff member seemed to be trying to calm the situation, before Tom and Rita headed down the red carpet to pose for pictures.

Rita has since taken to Instagram to hit out at claims they were angry at the staff member, explaining: "This is called I can't hear you. People are screaming. What did you say? Where are we supposed to go?"

She added: "We had a great time! Go and see Asteroid City!"

Despite the seemingly tense exchange, Tom and Rita still smiled as they posed for the cameras.

Tom looked very smart as he wore a black tuxedo and matching bow tie. He completed his look with a crisp white shirt.

Rita looked especially glamorous wearing a black dress adorned with silver jewels which sparkled in the lights.

She also opted for a long black cloak which trailed behind her and accessorised her look with some simple silver earrings.

Rita opted for a glamorous makeup look, complete with a nude lipstick, and pulled her hair back into an elegant up-do.

The couple both star in Asteroid City, which is directed by Wes Anderson.

The film is set in a fictional desert town and tells the story of stargazing in the desert.

At the centre of the story is widower Augie Steenbeck, played by long-time Wes Anderson collaborator Jason Schwartzman.

Augie decided to take his four children to see their grandfather Stanley Zak (Tom Hanks).

"In my loneliness, I've learned to give complete and unquestioning faith to the people I love," Stanley tells Aguie in the film's trailer.

He continues: 'I don't know if that includes you, but it included my daughter and your four children."

The cast also includes stars such as Tilda Swinton, Scarlett Johansson and Maya Hawke.
