Throughout jazz history, there have been smallish bands that punch well above their weight, creating so much variety of sound with seven or eight instruments that you could swear there were three times as many. Tom Green’s is the latest in this distinguished but often overlooked line. Two brass, two saxophones, piano, bass and drums produce a kaleidoscope of harmony that is not only phenomenally skilful, but absorbing and endlessly entertaining, too. The players are all in their 20s and this is their debut album. They’ve stuck together for two years now and their dedication shows.
